Port Campbell and the Great Ocean Road

15 - 16 December 2022

Magic Rock.

Wednesday… it started getting real on the Great Ocean Road. It was a cold and windy day to Port Campbell.

First stop, the Crags. Julie wears her new hoodie and rain jacket to beat the cold. We spook an echidna on the way to the rocks.

Anthony sees Magic Rock on the map and thinks the pictures are pretty cool and we should find it. Google Maps takes us to a dirt track that has a gate across it. Julie does not want to trespass, so we turn around. Then this dirt bike flies by us, and gets around the gate. We look at each other and say what the hell.

Julie on the other side of the gate, still not sure about this. The path eventually narrowed to follow a fence line.

We could hear the waves breaking on the beach, but couldn’t see the water.

After about 45 minutes, we took a path to the ocean. The view was nice, but no Magic Rock.

By this time we are nearly two hours into our hike. Julie is determined to find the damn Magic Rock, so we keep going. After another false trail, we finally find it. Was it worth the 3 hour detour? You be the judge.

The next few rock formations proved much easier to get to.

Because of the Magic Rock excursion, we got to Port Campbell after 8:00 pm. In the smaller towns, kitchens close by 8:00 pm for dinner (2:00 pm for lunch). So we had apples and cheese for dinner. We had a good breakfast the next day !!!

Thursday, the weather was beautiful on the Great Ocean Road, Julie’s coat was starting to do it’s magic.
