Leeds Castle

Julie and Anthony in front of Leeds Castle.

On Wednesday, Julie and Anthony drove to Leeds Castle. Leeds Castle feels a lot like a smaller version of the Biltmore House (in Asheville, North Carolina) but with centuries more history (and a moat).

The first stone castle was built on this site in the 12th Century. As with most of the historic buildings we have visited, the Castle went through many changes over the centuries, until the 1920s Lady Baillie a wealthy American transformed Leeds Castle into an opulent home, where she threw lavish parties for prominent politicians, actors and royalty (Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson).

As you can see Leeds Castle is gorgeous and well maintained, with picture postcard views from every angle.

After a nice lunch, with the above view of the castle, we went to the birds of prey demonstration on the grounds.

Anthony taking pictures of pretty flowers and Julie telling him to get the lead out or we will miss the show.

We took the pontoon boat across the lake to the Castle.

Seven Famous Queens owned Leeds Castle at one time or another. These were strong women, who put their stamp on English history (and sometimes faced the consequences). Here are some photographs we took inside the Castle.

Other views from around the castle grounds.

On Thursday, Julie and Anthony took a city hike around Canterbury, including the River Stour riverwalk.

On Friday, we said goodbye to our terrific apartment on the top floor of Saint James house and set out for Torquay.
