Margaret River

The Table at Lake Cave, a unique formation.

On Thursday, we took a tour of the Cave Lake. It was not a very large cave, but had some beautiful features. The picture above shows a stalactite and a stalagmite that had met, creating a Table. The nifty thing is that the limestone floor has been worn away by the water, so it’s just floating there. Our guide, Tom, said it weighed something like 6 metric tons. The reflection below just makes it that much cooler.

Once upon a time, the cave was hidden underground, then sometime many years ago, the ground collapsed, creating this hole. We walked about a million steps down to actually get into the cave (and a million back up).

We didn’t have cell reception, so Anthony took a picture of the map.

After the tour was done, we drove down to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, then had lunch in Augusta. Here are some pictures from our drive. Two or three times, we drove by a pasture that had 10s of kangaroos. Just hanging out. We were not able to get a picture. We’re hoping we will on our way to Perth on Saturday.

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse where the Southern and Pacific Ocean meet. The flies were pretty ferocious.

Gas Bay, Mouth of the Margaret River and Surfer’s Point. The surfer above was at Surfer’s Point. It looked really cold. The Margaret River does not actually meet the ocean at its mouth. We stopped to talk to a very nice Aussie couple who told us it does at high tide and perhaps during the winter when there’s more water.

On Friday we took a Margaret River Wine Tour. We visited three wineries: Woody Nook, Knotting Hill, Bettenay’s Winery (who had the best wine), Margaret River Chocolate, Grove Distillery, Cowaramup Brewery. It was an excellent tour, the wineries were lovely and the people on our tour were fun and more than a little tipsy.

Keville Falls on the way out of Margaret River.

Here are the kangaroos we were hoping to see. There were maybe 30 roos hanging out. Below is a flying cow in Cowaramup. We think its a cousin to the pirate cow we saw in Cape Leeuwin lighthouse.
