Crystal Caves and Rottnest Island
24 - 25 November 2022
Thursday: On the way from Cervantes to Perth we saw a sign for Yanchep National Park. Julie did a quick search and saw they had Koalas and the Crystal Caves, so we took a detour on the way to Perth. Julie spotted two sleeping Koalas in the Koala enclosure. Anthony took a half dozen photos of furry sleeping Koala butts, none of which are suitable for publishing. Instead we have photos of Kangaroos, who while cute, are considered pests for eating all of the tender new plants in the Koala enclosure.
We descended into the famous Crystal Caves, a tourist attraction since the early 1900s. The Australian National Parks have protected the caves from “souveniring” since the 1960s, but the caves are now threatened by Perth siphoning the water that supports the troglodytes.
We stopped at the Kabob and Pizza Boss and had kabob wraps for Thanksgiving Lunch. While they don’t do Thanksgiving when we do, the Aussies celebrate Black Friday the same day as us.
Once we got to Perth, Anthony was very excited to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Royal Theater, a block and a half from our hotel. The actors, dressed in full Rocky Horror regalia, who re-enacted what was on the screen on the stage. The theater had dozens of pinball machines, including a LOTR machine, which we played while waiting for the show to start.
Friday we took the express ferry down the Swan River out to Rottnest Island. We rented bikes and rode around the island, with amazing views around every corner.
