On The Road to Kalbarri

10 November 2022

After another huge breakfast at the Perth Doubletree restaurant, we started our 355 mile drive North toward Kalbarri. Julie drove for the first time, keeping left and driving toward the middle of the road. We decided to take Hwy 2, which runs closer to the ocean, rather than a more inland route. This route allowed for glimpses of the Indian Ocean, from the car.

A bit further down the road, we stopped at the Nilgen Lookout. We took a short walk to stretch our legs and take some pictures.

Around 1:30 P.M. as Anthony’s huge breakfast was wearing off, we received a sign from god, “Lobster Shack". Anthony looked it up, and it was about 45 minutes down the road, in the seaside town of Cervantes.

Julie and I both got the Lobster Rolls, which we both agreed were good, but not the best we ever had. The real treat was the outside seating, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Anthony couldn’t resist dipping his toe into the water, keeping a sharp eye out for blue box jellyfish.

As we ate dinner, a storm was coming up from the south. The southern sky was menacing while to the north it was serene and inviting. Fortunately we were headed North.

Australia is famous for it’s oversized roadside flora and fauna. The Western Australia giant lobster is located off of Hwy 1 near Dongara. Anthony couldn’t resist.

We arrived at the Kilbarri Edge Resort a little after 6 PM. We unpacked and had a lovely dinner at the hotel restaurant. Can’t wait to visit some of the sights we saw from a distance on our way into Kalbari.

Surprises: We were happy to see Waze works in Australia, but there doesn’t seem to be anyone using it. Also, nearly all Australian drivers maintained speeds at or below the posted speed limit. (which annoyed Julie to no end).
