Mauri Carvings on Lake Taupo

Monday, we took a cruise to view Mauri Carvings on Lake Taupo. These carvings were created in the 1970s. The boat captains commentary on the way was very educational. Not only did we learn about the carvings, we learned that Singapore could fit into Lake Taupo, and when Lake Taupo erupted 25,600 years ago it caused a mini ice age. Lake Taupo is part of a super volcano, which would kill everyone on the North Island and impact all life on earth if it erupted. Lake Taupo is so large you can see the curvature of the earth on it. We also learned that New Zealand was the only place that the number of car accidents increased during covid.

The Capitan let Anthony steer the boat, she may have regretted it.

After the cruise we drove to Huka falls.

Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe

On Tuesday, we went for a hike at Taranaki Falls. On the way there we drove past Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, the locations used for Mount Doom in Lord of The Rings. We took a 4 mile walk to view Taranaki Falls.

On Wednesday, we stopped at the Craters of the Moon on the way to Rotorua.

We stopped at the Orakei Korako Geothermal Park, but had enough steamy rocks for the day and continued to Rotorua instead of paying to cross the lake.
